When deciding to start a business there are a number of options that need to be addressed, including whether or not to register a business name for your company. If you decide to proceed with a business name registration, there are some important tips that will assist you in picking a name that speaks to your operation and will be permitted by the Government. Some restrictive factors in a name registration to be aware of include, but are not limited to:
- The name you choose cannot be offensive or contain inappropriate words;
- You may not use words that are indicative of a corporate entity, such as Inc. or Limited; and
- You may not use someone else’s name in your business name registration.
Run Searches
Once you have confirmed that the name you have chosen is not restricted, you must run searches to ensure that the name is available for your business to use. If the name is available, you can proceed to apply for a Master Business Licence which is valid for 5 years.

Upon receiving the Master Business Licence and commencing operations under your new name, it is important to make sure that your business name as well as the entity’s legal name are present on all business documents. This ensures that the public is aware of the entity that they are conducting business with.
